Britain summons DPRK ambassador over reported nuclear test

British Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Hugo Swire on Thursday summoned the ambassador of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in London following the reported nuclear test.

In a statement, Swire said he summoned Hyon Hak Bong, the DPRK ambassador to Britain, to "stress in the strongest terms the UK's condemnation of their nuclear test."

"This is a clear violation of multiple UN Security Council Resolutions, and the United Kingdom supports the resolve of the UN to implement further significant measures against the regime," Swire said.

On Wednesday, Britain and other members of the UN Security Council issued a statement strongly condemning the latest act as "a clear threat to peace and security on the Korean peninsula and to international security," the minister noted.

"It is essential, as ever, that the international community is united in its approach. It will now commence work on such measures in a new Security Council resolution," he added.

The DPRK announced Wednesday that it has "successfully" carried out its first hydrogen bomb test.

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond on Wednesday also condemned the latest nuclear test, describing it as "a grave breach of UN Security Council resolutions". Enditem
