Malta to host 10th Happy Chinese New Year events

The 2016 Happy Chinese New Year in Valletta events were scheduled to be held for the 10th consecutive year in Malta, from Jan. 23 to 30, 2016, announced by Wang Yanjun, Director of the China Cultural Centre in Malta on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference at the centre in Valletta, Wang introduced that two Chinese groups, the Sizhou Dramatic Theatre from Anhui Province and the Jinan Song and Dance Theatre from Shandong Province, will come to Malta and participate in several performances in Valletta and Marsascala respectively.

Paul Bugeja, Chief Executive Officer of the Malta Tourism Authority, said Malta had had a successful year in tourism as the tourist arrivals reached 1.8 million in 2015, and the Happy Chinese New Year events are in conformity with "our strategy in order to support the leaner months, especially the first 3 months of the new year which are crucial in the tourism industry and for the sustainability of the industry".

Owen Bonnici, Malta's Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government, stressed that the events are important to the tourism industry, as well as to the bilateral relationship between Malta and China.

Chinese Ambassador to Malta Cai Jinbiao concluded the press conference by saying that the events will definitely help promote cultural exchanges and increase general understanding.

Jointly organized by the China Cultural Centre in Malta and the Valletta Local Council, the Happy Chinese New Year events earns a good reputation among Maltese public. Last year, the events draw over 80,000 audience in a serial of activities and performances. Endit
