Nigerien hospitals paralyzed by doctors' 10-day strike

Operations in public hospitals in Niger were paralyzed on Wednesday after specialist doctors began a 10-day strike to push the government to improve their living and working conditions.
For the last one and half years, specialist doctors have been engaged in talks with the government over the need for a salary increase on the basis of their academic qualifications as well as their years of experience.
Despite talks having been held with different stakeholders including health ministry officials, it seems progress has not been made on the doctors' demands.
The government insists it cannot pay additional salaries to these specialists beyond the specialization allowance they already enjoy.
However, the specialist doctors, through their union leadership, said "they were only seeking justice in the handling of their concerns." Endit
