Boao airport to start trial operation in March

Xinhua, January 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

The airport of Boao, host of the annual Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) in south China's Hainan Province, should begin trial operations in late March to serve this year's conference, according to insiders.

Construction of the airport in the coastal town in Hainan Province began in March last year with an estimated investment of 1.13 billion yuan(about 173 million U.S. dollars). It has a runway 2,600 meters long and 45 meters wide, designed for aircraft such as Airbus 320 and Boeing 737.

"Construction has entered its final stage," said Hu Wentai, head of the project. "It will be completed in February and it will then carry out test flights."

Apart from serving the BFA, the airport will offer flights to other cities. It will be able to accommodate 480,000 passengers and handle 1,440 tonnes of cargo annually by 2020.

The BFA was launched in 2001 as a platform for leaders from government, business and academia to discuss pressing global and regional issues.

This year's forum will be held from March 22 to 25. Endi
