SW China police seize tonnes of illegal chicken feet

Xinhua, January 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Police in southwest China have seized and destroyed 19.6 tonnes of smuggled chicken feet in a recent raid, local authorities said Wednesday.

The illegal products were found in a national nature reserve in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, after a tip-off on Jan. 4.

Three suspects said they had driven through the nature reserve to avoid inspection by customs staff and quarantine personnel, as they could not provide any papers to prove the products legal.

Chicken feet, often served as a cold dish with a beer, are very popular in China. Packaged chicken feet can be found in supermarkets and convenience stores. With supply hardly keeping pace with demand, chicken feet are being illegally imported, processed locally and sold to vendors across China.

Frozen products like chicken feet may contain viruses and be a hazards to public health.

In March last year, Yunnan customs seized 133 tonnes of smuggled chicken feet and beef in another nature reserve. Endi
