Indian authorities have sounded an alert in New Delhi and asked Delhi Police to remain vigilant to foil any possible terror attempt in the capital city, India's official broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) said Wednesday.
The broadcaster quoting its sources said the directive based on intelligence inputs has come in the wake of attack at Pathankot airbase.
Seven Indian troops and six gunmen were killed in the four-day stand-off inside the Pathankot airbase, about 430 km north of Indian capital city of New Delhi.
Authorities have beefed up security at domestic and international terminal of Indira Gandhi International airport.
"Staff of several airlines have been sensitised about the alert, asking them to report any suspicious movement or object," the broadcaster said.
"The paramilitary troopers of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) which guards the high-valued installation, has been asked to maintain extra vigil with the deployment of additional personnel."
The Republic Day in India marks the date when India's new republican constitution came into force in 1950. Every year the day is celebrated officially in India on January 26. The main function is held in Indian capital where India's cultural diversity and military might are displayed.
On Saturday at 3:30 a.m. (local time), a group of gunmen in military fatigues entered highly guarded Pathankot airbase firing with automatic weapons and hurling grenades, thereby engaging Indian troops for four days.
Officials said a hijacked police car was used by gunmen in the attack.
Indian Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar said "security lapses" led to the attack on the airbase. Endit
