Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski declared on Monday that the government would increase pensions by 5.0 percent in 2016.

"Pensions will be increased in September and around 300,000 retirees will receive their increased retirement incomes in the beginning of October as usual. In retrospect, since 2006, the lowest pension increased by a total of 94 percent while the average pension increased by a total of 79 percent, which is quite a boost," stated Gruevski.

Gruevski also underlined that a pensioner who in 2006 received the lowest possible pension -- 4,300 Macedonian denar (around 76 U.S. dollars) -- would receive a pension of 8,400 denar (around 149 U.S. dollars) in October of 2016.

"We worked very hard and managed to increase the pensions every year. It was a promise to the people and we are realizing it," added Gruevski. Endit
