Newcomers fill spots in Australia's ODI cricket squad to meet rival India

Xinhua, January 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

Polarizing all-rounder Shane Watson has been left out of Australia's One Day International squad to face India this month, while uncapped newcomers Joel Paris and Scott Boland have been included in the 13-man squad announced on Monday.

Australia will play five ODIs against the touring Indian side in January, with the series set to begin after the the team's final Test match against the West Indies.

Watson was left out of squad on the back of poor performances in the domestic Twenty20 competition - the Big Bash League, while both Paris and Boland have shown impressive form in both shorter forms of the game.

With the series to begin soon, the hosts will be led by captain Steve Smith, while short form specialists James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Glen Maxwell and Matthew Wade also have got the call-up.

However national selector Rod Marsh said the inclusion of newcomers Boland and Paris was a testament to the strength of the domestic competition.

"Scott (Boland) has continued to impress the selection panel, having bowled very well for Victoria this year. He certainly deserves this chance at the top level," Marsh said.

"Joel (Paris) is an exciting young left-arm bowler who swings the ball well and has bowled beautifully in the Big Bash League for the Perth Scorchers. He has had very good figures in short-form cricket and we really want him to make the most of this opportunity."

The series begins in Perth on Jan. 12, before traveling to Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney.

The Indian squad is set to play two practice matches against the Western Australian state side in Perth on Jan. 8 and 9.

The Australia ODI squad will comprise Steve Smith (c), David Warner, George Bailey, Scott Boland, Josh Hazlewood, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, Joel Paris, Matthew Wade. Enditem
