Online shopping in South Korea hit a record high, nearing to 5 trillion won (4.23 billion U.S. dollars), in November on the back of demand for shopping with smartphones, a government report showed Monday.

Shopping in cyberspace reached 4.97 trillion won in November, up 19.5 percent from a year earlier, according to Statistics Korea. It marked the largest since the statistical agency began compiling the data in 2001.

The figure accounted for 15.4 percent of total retail sales in November, marking the highest portion in history.

Retail sales increased 4.2 percent from a year earlier to 32.03 trillion won in November.

In cyberspace, sales of cosmetics and food & beverages surged more than 30 percent last month. Online sales in clothing and consumer electronics expanded 20.5 percent and 18.5 percent, respectively.

Mobile shopping through smartphones led the online shopping growth. Mobile shopping jumped 52.3 percent to 2.44 trillion won in November, making up about half of the overall online shopping. Endit
