1st LD Writethru: Indian special forces continue operation against 2 terrorists holed up in air base

Xinhua, January 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

India special forces on Monday continued their anti-terror operations for the third day against two militants said to be still holed up in the key northern air base, sources said.

Some six militants attacked the Pathankot air base in Punjab state early Saturday morning. Four of them were eliminated by the Indian security forces after five hours.

"While one more militant was killed by the security forces Sunday, his body has not yet been found. So two militants are still suspected to be holed up inside the base," the sources said on condition of anonymity.

Local TV channels reported that heavy gunfire has been heard since Monday morning from inside the air base as the anti-terror operations entered its third day.

Seven Indian security forces personnel have lost their lives in the terror attack, said to be carried out by Pakistani militants who had sneaked into this country from across the border.

The air base is a key defense installation where Russian-made fleet of MiG-21 fighter jets and Mi-35 attack helicopters are stationed. However, all the Indian Air Force assets are safe.

Indian media also reported that India will ask Pakistan to act against the militant group suspected to be behind the attack within 72 hours, or will cancel the foreign secretaries' meeting scheduled for this month. Enditem
