Tokyo stocks retreat in early trading as investors pensive on 1st trading day of 2016

Tokyo stocks retreated Monday on the first trading day of the year, as Wall Street's slump at the end of last year saw investors in a pensive mood.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 183.27 points, or 0.96 percent, from last Wednesday to 18,850.44, while the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 9.97 points, or 0.64 percent, at 1,537.33.

Early decliners comprised securities, rubber products and air transport-linked shares.

Markets here were closed Thursday and Friday for the New Year break. Endit
