Sudanese rebels accuse gov't army of violating ceasefire

Xinhua, January 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

Rebels of Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)/northern sector on Sunday accused the Sudanese army of violating a ceasefire recently declared by President Omar al-Bashir.

Last Thursday al-Bashir extended the ceasefire for one more month in all areas of conflict in Sudan, including Blue Nile state.

Early in September, the president declared a two-month comprehensive ceasefire until Nov. 22, aiming to encourage the armed groups to take part in the national dialogue.

SPLM/northern sector said Sunday that government warplanes bombarded villages south of Al-Kurmuk town at the advent of this year, including the morning al-Bashir declared extension of the cease-fire.

The Sudanese army could not be immediately contacted to comment on the rebels' claim.

Blue Nile and South Kordofan states have been witnessing armed clashes between the Sudanese army and rebels of the SPLM/northern sector since 2011.

In November, a round of peace talks between the two sides failed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Endit
