13 police recruits killed in suicide attacks in Iraq's Salahudin

Xinhua, January 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least 13 would-be policemen were killed and 15 others wounded when three suicide bombers attacked a police training center in a military airbase in Iraq's northern central province of Salahudin, a provincial security source told Xinhua on Sunday.

The attacks occurred late on Saturday night when the three attackers entered the major military airbase, known as Camp Speicher, in north of Salahudin's provincial capital city of Tikrit, and detonated their explosive belts inside the training center, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The attacked center is housing trainees from Iraq's northern province of Nineveh who are preparing to recapture the Islamic State (IS)-held after being freed from the extremist militants by Iraqi security forces and international air support.

Salahudin, a predominantly Sunni province with its capital of Tikrit, some 170 km north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, is the hometown of former President Saddam Hussein. Endit
