Guinea declared free of Ebola after over 2,500 deaths

Xinhua, December 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Guinea was on Tuesday declared free of Ebola epidemic by the World Health Organization.

The disease, which was first reported in west Africa early last year, has left 2,536 people dead out of 3,807 reported cases in Guinea.

A major concert will be held on Tuesday at the People's Palace in Conakry to celebrate the end of Ebola, which is expected to be attended by over 100,000 people.

A country is declared Ebola-free after 42 days without a single new case since the recovery of the last Ebola patient.

As for the other two countries most hit by Ebola, Sierra Leone was declared free of the virus in November, while Liberia twice recorded new cases after it was declared Ebola-free in May and September. Endit
