Indonesia ends search operation for boat victims

The Indonesian rescuers on Tuesday ended their search and rescue operation for the victims of a boat which capsized on Dec. 19 off Sulawesi Island.

So far, 40 people were rescued, 66 dead and 12 others still missing, head of the Search and Rescue Office of South Sulawesi Province Roki Asikin said Tuesday.

"The operation was closed at 16:00 p.m. local time," he told Xinhua by phone from Makasar, the capital of the province.

The authorities had extended the operation for 3 days, he said.

According to survivors, some people may still be trapped inside the boat.
