183 PKK rebels killed in ongoing military operations in Turkey

Xinhua, December 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

A total of 183 militants of the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) have been killed in the ongoing military operations in southeastern Turkey, said a Turkish military statement on Thursday.

The Turkish security forces have killed 122 PKK members in Cizre town and eight PKK Silopi town in Sirnak province in southeastern Turkey, according to the statement.

Thirty PKK militants have been killed in the continuous military operations staged by the Turkish security forces in Sur town of Diyarbakir province in southeastern Turkey, said the statement.

The Turkish security forces have also wiped out 16 PKK rebels in Dargecit town and three PKK members in Nusaybin town of Mardin province, said the statement.

The statement added that the Turkish troops have killed four PKK militants in Sehi Ormanlari region of Bitlis province.

The PKK negotiated a cease-fire with Ankara in 2013, but the truce fell apart in the wake of a suicide bomb attack in the border town of Suruc in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa on July 20, in which 33 pro-Kurdish and left-wing activists were killed.

Tensions have been running high, especially in southeastern Turkey, as major military operations against PKK militants have been under way since July after the truce failed.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. Endit
