Roadside bomb kills police officer in Egypt's Sinai

Xinhua, December 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

A police officer was killed and two policemen injured Thursday when a blast targeted their patrol in Egypt's restive North Sinai province, according to the Interior Ministry.

The explosive device was planted by unknown assailants on the side of the Ismaliya-Arish highway. Security forces have started an investigation into the accident after evacuating the injured, according to a statement.

Egypt has been facing anti-government attacks, mostly in Sinai Peninsula, which have killed hundreds of police and soldiers since 2013.

Most of the attacks were claimed by Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis militant group which has changed its name to "Sinai State" and declared loyalty to the Islamic State.

Continuous military operations in the peninsula have killed hundreds of militants as part of the country's "war against terrorism". Endit
