UN Security Council extends mandate of peacekeeping mission in Golan Heights

Xinhua, December 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

The UN Security Council on Tuesday extended the mandate of the world body's peacekeeping force in the Golan Heights to continue to maintain the ceasefire between the Israeli and Syrian forces.

In a resolution adopted here, the 15-nation council renewed the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) for a period of six months until June 30, 2016.

The council stressed the obligation of both parties to "scrupulously and fully respect the terms of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement, calls on the parties to exercise maximum restraint and prevent any breaches of the ceasefire and the area of separation."

While condemning the continued fighting in the area of separation, the Security Council also called on all parties to Syrian domestic conflict to cease military actions in the UNDOF area of operations.

The UNDOF was established on May 31, 1974, in accordance with a Security Council resolution, following the agreed disengagement of the Israeli and Syrian forces in the Golan Heights. Since then, the mission has remained in the area to maintain the ceasefire between the Israeli and Syrian forces and to supervise the implementation of the disengagement agreement.

Since March 2012 the Syrian civil war has spilled over into the mission's area of operation and clashes between the Syrian government and armed opposition groups have kept escalating. Enditem
