Kazakhstan, EU sign agreement on enhanced partnership

Xinhua, December 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Representatives of Kazakhstan and the European Union(EU) on Monday signed a new agreement on expanded partnership and cooperation in Astana.

The deal was signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Erlan Idrissov and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

Under the agreement, the two sides will boost cooperation in 29 areas, including international and regional security, disarmament, trade, investment, infrastructure development, innovation, culture, sports, and tourism.

Idrissov said Europe is the largest trading partner of Kazakhstan and also the largest source of direct investment and the new agreement will create conditions for more bilateral investment cooperation.

The three-year negotiations between Kazakhstan and the EU were finalized during the visit of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev to Brussels in October 2014.

The EU is a major trade and investment partner of Kazakhstan. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan is the third largest supplier of energy to Europe out of non-OPEC members. Around 70 percent of Kazakhstan's oil products go to the EU. Enditem
