Swedish train operator cancels Denmark trains due to ID checks

Xinhua, December 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

A major Swedish rail operator on Monday said it would cancel all departures to Denmark as Swedish authorities start to fine travel companies for every passenger traveling without a photo ID, local media reported.

Around five daily departures on either side of the Oresund bridge will be affected as state-owned train operator SJ stops all trains to and from Denmark, public broadcaster Swedish Television reported.

The operator told the channel there wouldn't be enough time on the train before entering Sweden to check passenger ID's once the fines come into force on Jan. 4.

"The other (option) was to perform the checks on the platform before the passengers board, but there isn't enough time between arrival and departure," said SJ's head of communications, Monica Berglund.

SJ have advised passengers traveling to Copenhagen to change train operators in the southern region of Skane, the channel reported.

More southern train routes may be affected as operators begin checking ID's, according to the southern public transport authority Skanetrafiken.

"There is a risk that we will have to reduce the number of departures during rush hour," Magnus Andersson, head of trains at Skanetrafiken, told the news agency TT. Endit
