1st LD Writethru: India's Sonia Gandhi, son Rahul get bail in corruption case

Xinhua, December 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

An Indian court on Saturday granted bail to main opposition Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul and four other top party leaders in a corruption case.

The bail was granted by the lower court in the national capital, just minutes after the hearing started in the graft case, involving a now-defunct English daily National Herald.

"Bail has been granted to all six top Congress leaders," party lawyer and former minister Kapil Sibal told the media.

Local TV channels earlier showed the Gandhis walking into the court accompanied by former prime minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia's daughter Priyanka Vadra, amid tight security.

The six top Congress leaders have been accused by ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy of trying to illegally acquire real estate worth millions of the National Herald.

Earlier the Gandhis had moved the Delhi High Court against the summons of the lower court, but were ordered to appear before it.

The Congress party has accused the BJP of "political vandetta" in the case, a charge denied by the ruling party. Enditem
