Afghan security forces kill 20 militants within day

Xinhua, December 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Afghan security forces have pressed on to clear the militants in restive provinces and killed 20 militants in the latest operations, the country's Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

"Afghan army, police and personnel of the intelligence agency carried out joint cleanup operations in Kunduz, Ghazni, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Jawzjan and Badakhshan provinces within the past 24 hours, killing 20 armed insurgents, wounding nine and detaining one insurgent," the ministry said in a statement.

The joint forces also found and seized weapons in addition to defusing dozens of landmines and roadside bombs, said the statement that provides daily operational updates.

The statement also confirmed the loss of 10 army personnel during clashes in the operations and as a result of separate attacks across the country over the same period.

The Taliban militants, who ruled the country before they were ousted in late 2001, renewed armed insurgency, staging ambushes and suicide attacks, killing combatants as well as civilians.

The Taliban has yet to make comments. Enditem
