Olympic champion Cielo disappoints at Rio 2016 qualifiers

Xinhua, December 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Olympic champion Cesar Cielo failed to make the final of the 100m freestyle at Brazil's first Rio 2016 swimming qualifiers on Friday.

The 28-year-old clocked 49.55 seconds, to finish 11th fastest and well behind leader Nicolas Oliveira's 48.41.

He was still scheduled to compete in the 50m freestyle at the event in the southern Brazilian city of Palhoca.

Winner of the 50m freestyle at the Beijing 2008 Games, Cielo will have another chance to earn an Olympic 100m berth at the second and final qualifying competition in Rio de Janeiro in April.

The Brazilian has been plagued by injuries in recent years and withdrew from the 2015 FINA World Championships with a shoulder problem. Endit
