EU leaders push for building of energy union

Xinhua, December 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Union (EU) leaders called for further actions to build the Energy Union here on Friday in a statement following the two-day summit.

The leaders called for swift submission of the relevant legislative proposals in line with its previous guidance in building the Energy Union.

They also urged member states to fully implement the legislation on renewable energy, energy-efficiency and other measures, such as improved investment opportunities, in order to meet the 2020 target on renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Besides, the leaders agreed on swift implementation of projects of common interest and optimal use of infrastructure for the benefit of a fully-functioning and interconnected market and energy security.

"Any new infrastructure should entirely comply with the Third Energy Package and other applicable EU legislation as well as with the objectives of the Energy Union," stressed the statement.

The European Commission announced this February the Energy Union strategy to bring greater energy security, sustainability and competitiveness. Then EU leaders agreed to create an Energy Union this March during a summit meeting in Brussels. Endit
