Philippines to implement 12-day truce with leftist rebels

The Philippine government has declared a unilateral ceasefire with the leftist New People's Army (NPA) for a peaceful observance of Christmas and New Year holidays, a senior government official said Friday.

President Benigno S. Aquino III has approved the proposal of Department of National Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin for the 12-day "suspension of military operations" from Dec. 23, 2015 to Jan. 3, 2016, said Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr.

Earlier, the leadership of the leftist rebel group declared its own truce during the same dates.

The 4,000-strong NPA has been waging war against the government for over four decades. Enditem
