Bulgarian customs seize over 80,000 suspicious or undeclared textile products

Xinhua, December 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Customs officers in Plovdiv have seized more than 80,000 suspicious or undeclared textile products hidden in a truck traveling from Turkey through Greece to Bulgaria, officials said here on Thursday.

According to the National Customs Agency (NCA), the officials suspected that nearly 50,600 items such as shirts and sportswear from world famous brands violate intellectual property rights.

Besides the goods suspected to be counterfeit, officers discovered more than 32,000 items including jeans, sweatshirts, jerseys and socks, and 45,000 square meters of fabric for curtains that were not declared.

Bulgaria, a member of the European Union since 2007, has been making increasing efforts to protect intellectual property rights.

According to NCA, in 2014 customs authorities detained 844,089 goods for which there were reasons to believe that they violate intellectual property rights, what was about 50 percent more than in 2013. Endit
