France holds meeting on Syria on diplomatic efforts boost

Xinhua, December 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

France is hosting a meeting on the Syrian conflict with representatives from the United States, Europe, Arab states and Turkey, Foreign Minster Laurent Fabius said on Tuesday.

Amid diplomatic efforts to initiate a political transition in Syria after a nearly five-year-long civil war in the country, Fabius met here on Monday with his counterparts from Western and Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, United Arab Emirates and Qatar, to discuss the next stages of the process initiated in Vienna to resolve the Syria crisis.

France, involved in Syria negotiations to peacefully end the crisis there, recalled "the need to link the goal of ceasefire with the prospect of a credible political transition in Syria."

Participants at the Paris meeting also hailed the Riyadh conference held last week, describing it as a "milestone" in negotiations between Syrian factions including rebels, opposition and government representatives, to initiate political negotiations and establish a ceasefire. Endit
