Official: Nigeria targets three athletics medals at Rio Games

Xinhua, December 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nigeria is aiming for at least three medals in athletics at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, a top official with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) said on Tuesday.

The federation was working hard to ensure that the athletes of the country would have a satisfactory performance in Rio, Yusuf Alli, the AFN'S Technical Manager, told reporters in Lagos.

"Our target is nothing less than three medals. We hope to have a good performance," said Alli.

The 2016 Olympic Games is scheduled for August 5 to 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Alli, a gold medalist at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand, said Nigeria hoped to do better at the 2016 Africa Senior Championships.

"We hope to repeat or surpass the record that we had in 2014. Although our main focus is on the Olympics, we are not undermining the African Championships either," he added.

Nigeria won 10 golds, six silvers and one bronze at the 19th Africa Senior Championships in Marakech, Morocco in 2014.

The 20th Africa Senior Championships is slated for June 22 to 26 in Durban, South Africa. Endi
