Typhoon Melor lashed the central provinces of Philippines on Tuesday, leaving at least one killed and millions of people without power, the country's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Tuesday.

According to the agency, a total of 162,729 families or 733,150 people have been evacuated on Tuesday.

A total of 16 domestic flights were cancelled on Tuesday due to the weather disturbance. Due to rough sea conditions by the typhoon, a total of 7,366 passengers, 75 vessels, 21 motorbancas and 44 rolling cargoes were stranded.

Power interruptions were still being experienced in nine provinces due to tripping of transmission lines, while communication has been out since Monday night in Northern Samar Province.

According to the report by NDRRMC, six cities and 14 municipalities have suspended school classes due to Melor.

Melor brushed the northern part of Samar island, a farming island of 1.5 million people, on Monday morning with winds gusting up to 185 km per hour, the state weather bureau said.

The cold northeast monsoon winds will weaken the typhoon Wednesday morning into severe tropical storm, then into tropical depression on Thursday as it makes its way out of Philippine area of responsibility. Endit
