At least 40 corpses discovered in Burundi's capital

Xinhua, December 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 40 corpses were discovered in Nyakabiga and Ngagara neighborhoods in the Burundian capital Bujumbura, sources told Xinhua on Saturday.

"In Nyakabiga, we counted 25 dead bodies of civilians and ten of them were found in the valley of Ntahangwa River. Four of the 25 corpses were identified, but the others have not yet been identified," said local administration sources in Nyakabiga zone.

According to the source, these people were killed in fierce fightings on Friday, which lasted the whole day.

Witnesses told Xinhua scores of dead bodies were also founded in Musaga neighborhood.

Demonstrations against Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza's third term bid had been staged in Nyakabiga, Ngagara and Musaga neighborhoods in April, plunging the country into a political turmoil.

The opposition and the civil society strongly blame the president, saying the third term bid was a violation of the national constitution.

The protests and Nkurunziza's re-election in July led to the killing of more than 300 people and forced some 200,000 people into exile in neighboring countries. Enditem
