Suspected Boko Haram kill 10 in NE Nigeria attack

Xinhua, December 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 10 people were killed and many others abducted in an attack suspected to be a perpetration of Boko Haram near Biu district of Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, local sources said Saturday.

Musa Tella, a resident of the remote Kamuya village in the district, said a group of insurgents attacked the area late Thursday, shooting sporadically and forcing many residents to flee their homes.

Eleven people were injured, most of them having bullet wounds, he told reporters after trekking about 40 km to Biu town to formally inform authorities of the incident on Saturday. Many houses were also razed during the attack.

"Some families are nowhere to be found because they were actually forced to go with the terrorists," Tella added.

Security forces have launched an investigation to apprehend the attackers, a military source said.

Fleeing Boko Haram fighters have intensified attacks on local communities in Borno State, especially in the southern part of the province, not too far from Sambisa Forest, a den of the terrorists where security forces have continued to launch aerial and ground bombardment.

Boko Haram has since 2009 waged a campaign of violence in Nigeria in an effort to establish an Islamic state, affecting surrounding countries including Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has put fighting against Boko Haram on top of his agenda since he took the helm of the country in May this year. Endit
