Australian cosmetic surgery industry under spotlight following botched surgeries

Xinhua, December 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Australia's cosmetic surgery industry is under further scrutiny after a state government flags a review and potential strict new rules following a series of horror cases from botched surgeries.

New South Wales state health minister Jillian Skinner said on Wednesday that recent incidents, including a woman who was rushed to hospital in September from a suspected heart attack reportedly during breast enhancement surgery, had raised concerns about the regulation of the industry.

A range of medical practitioners including GPs and specialised plastic surgeons can perform cosmetic surgery in NSW. Many clinics perform services such as breast enhancements without specialised, hospital grade resuscitation equipment.

The discussion paper will consider what standards should apply and whether the new class of cosmetic surgery facilities require special licensing. Endit
