Power restored in more homes after storms battered north England

Xinhua, December 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Power supply has been restored in all properties in Lancaster, while more than 1,500 homes remain without power in Cumbria after storms battered north England, local electricity company confirmed Tuesday.

Electricity North West said all properties affected by Lancaster's main substation flooding has power restored.

However, some local faults affecting a handful of properties might result in a number of customers remaining cut off from power supply. The University of Lancaster, four commercial properties and a handful of homes are still without power.

Electricity North West warned that managed power cuts may be needed to reduce the strain on the network while repairs continue later on Tuesday.

In Cumbria, one of the worst-hit areas by storms over the weekend, more than 1,000 properties still have no power.

Electricity North West asked residents to conserve energy so that risk of further outages could be avoided.

Queen Elizabeth on Tuesday expressed her sympathy to those affected via social media.

"Please convey my sympathy to all those whose homes or livelihoods have been affected by the recent flooding. My thanks go to members of the emergency services, local authorities, military personnel and volunteers who are providing assistance in these difficult conditions," she said.

Cumbria Police on Monday recovered the body of an elderly man from a river, who reportedly fell into flooding water on Sunday.

Another man, a 70-year-old from County Tyrone, was found dead on a road in the Republic of Ireland. He was swept away when he got out from his car, which was stuck in flooding, according to local media.

There are 16 severe flood warnings, indicating danger to life, still in place. More rain is expected to lash these areas this week. Endit
