13 killed in train-jeep collision in eastern India

Xinhua, December 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 13 people have been killed in a train-jeep collision at an unmanned crossing in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, a police official said Tuesday.

"The tragic incident happened late Monday night when a speeding passenger train hit a jeep at an unmanned crossing in the state's Ramgarh district," he said, on condition of anonymity.

The victims were all occupants of the jeep whose tyre got stuck in the railway track. "They were all rushed to a local hospital by villagers where they were declared brought dead," he said.

The incident came to light Tuesday as the accident took place in a remote village, which is nearly 100 kms from state capital Ranchi.

Senior Indian Railways officials rushed to the accident site this morning after reports of severe disruption of train services in the area reached them.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official added. Endit
