German FM in Baghdad on official visit

Xinhua, December 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived here Monday on an official visit to meet with Iraqi top officials as the country fights the terrorist Islamic State (IS) group, an Iraqi Foreign Ministry source said.

Steinmeier is expected to hold talks with Iraqi Presidnet Fuad Masoum and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, in addition to meeting his Iraqi counterpart, Ibrahim al-Jaafari, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The talks with Iraqi leaders will tackle bilateral relations as well as the latest security and political developments in the country.

Steinmeier's visit came as Germany plans to send up to 1,200 troops to support the international alliance in its anti-terror actions in Syria and Iraq, after the Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament, voted on Dec. 4 to join the combat mission against the IS. Endit
