Xinhua, December 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least seven paramilitary troopers of India's Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and a civilian were wounded after militants attacked their convoy in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Monday, officials said.

The attack was carried out near Bijbehara town of Anantnag district, about 44 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Today in the morning militants attacked our convoy with gunfire near Bijbehara, wounding several personnel," Asish Kumar Jha, spokesman of CRPF in Srinagar told Xinhua. "The wounded CRPF men were immediately removed to hospital for treatment."

Hospital authorities at Bijbehara hospital said they provided first aid to eight CRPF personnel and referred them to Srinagar for specialized treatment.

"Eight CRPF personnel were brought to our hospital for treatment. Out of which seven were wounded with bullets," G.S.Mehta, medical superintendent at Bijbehara hospital said. "The eighth one had some injuries on his body and no bullet marks."

The CRPF spokesman said militants dressed in military uniform attacked the convoy on a highway leading to Srinagar.

"We have cordoned the area and launched search operation to trace militants," Jha said.

A civilian wounded in the attack was brought to Srinagar hospital for treatment, hospital authorities at SMHS hospital said.

People accompanying the civilian said he was injured in the Bijbehara attack.

"He was travelling in the private minibus behind CRPF bus at the time of attack, when bullet hit him in head," Mohammed Ashraf, accompanying the wounded civilian told media at SMHS hospital.

Reports said the attackers have managed to escape from the spot.

So far no militants outfit has claimed responsibility of the attack.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfights between the two sides take place intermittently across the region.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their Independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir. Endit
