Chairperson of Myanmar's National League for Democracy (NLD) Aung San Suu Kyi met with former military government leader Senior-General Than Shwe in Nay Pyi Taw Friday, sources with the NLD confirmed Saturday.
The meeting, which discussed the future of Myanmar, was the first ever between the pair after the Nov. 8 general election.
Than Shwe expressed recognition on Suu Kyi's success in the election, voicing support for rooting the democratic system, according to the disclosure by NLD senior member U Win Htein who believed that the meeting would help implement the transition of the country in the post-election.
Suu Kyi also met with Nay Shwe Thwe Aung, grandson of Than Shwe, on Nov. 19 that led to her meeting with Than Shwe who Suu Kyi believed is still influential on the current government and the military.
Than Shwe, former chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, transferred power to U Thein Sein's government in March 2011 after the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) won the November 2010 general election.
Than Shwe once met Suu Kyi during her house arrest in the tenure of military rule. Endit
