The Afghan security forces have recovered a weapons cache near the country's capital of Kabul, the National Directorate of Security (NDS) said on Thursday.

"The personnel of NDS have found a huge weapons and ammunition cache following a special operation in Kharwar district of (eastern) Logar province," NDS, the country's intelligence agency said in a statement.

One heavy machine gun, two AK-47 guns, eight Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), eight mortar rounds, 10 recoilless rifle rounds, 15 kg explosive materials and an explosive-laden motorcycle were among other items seized after the raid, the statement said.

The weapons belonged to militant group of Haqqani and three suspected militants were also captured during the operation, according to the statement.

As a Taliban-linked group of militants, the Haqqani network mostly operating in eastern provinces and capital Kabul, has been responsible for many high-profile attacks against security forces over the past years.

One truck and a vehicle were also confiscated, the statement said, adding that thousands rounds of bullets of different weapons were recovered from the cache in the province, some 60 km south of Kabul.
