Australian military apologizes for security scare by soldier on training mission

Xinhua, December 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) on Thursday apologized for an army member who was arrested for sparking a security scare while on a "training" mission.

Authorities were forced to lockdown two schools in the Brisbane area after a local resident had called police fearing a lone gunman was at large.

Video footage reportedly showed the man in full camouflage gear wearing a backpack and carrying a fake semi-automatic machine gun.

"The member was conducting a routine individual physical training exercise in a public area, and was unaware of the disruption the training activity had caused," the ADF said in a statement.

"Defence apologizes for the concern or disruption this incident has caused and extends its appreciation to the Brisbane community for their ongoing support."

The man was arrested on Wednesday after an hour-long manhunt and will appear in court mid-December charged with public nuisance. Endit
