Anti-doping agency requests bans on 26 Italian athletes

Xinhua, December 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Italian anti-doping agency has requested 26 Italian athletes to be banned from competition for two years, according to a statement published on the Italian National Olympic Committee's website Wednesday.

Italy's National Anti-Doping Organization(NADO) accused the athletes of "dodging tests" and "not being available" for sample taking.

The athletes involved included renowned ones such as triple jumper Fabrizio Donato, long jumper Andrew Howe and long-distance runner Daniele Meucci.

Sprinter Simone Collio, triple jumper Daniele Greco, middle-distance runner Andrea Lalli and retired former pole-vault world champion Giuseppe Gibilisco were also on the list.

The NADO accusations were based on investigations carried out in the northern cities of Trento and Bolzano, according to the statement.

Italy's leading sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport said the ban could affect Italy's performance at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Endit
