Germany's benchmark DAX index closes down

The benchmark DAX index at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange on Wednesday closed down 71.22 points at 11,190.02 points.

As the European Central Bank (ECB) is meeting to decide on its monetary policies, many investors here chose to take profit, according to local analysts. The blue-chip DAX index lost 0.63 percent.

Deutsche Boerse Group topped the list of risers with an increase of 1.69 percent. Infineon Technologies AG, a semiconductor producer, rose by 0.94 percent. Merck KGaA,a leading pharmaceutical, chemical and life science company, climbed by 0.58 percent. Beiersdorf AG, a skin care company, and adidas went up by 0.55 percent and 0.54 percent respectively.

K+S AG, a supplier of standard and specialty fertilizers, dropped by 4.76 percent. Linde AG, an industrial gas company, plunged by 2.86 percent. Deutsche Post AG slid by 2.58 percent. ThyssenKrupp AG fell by 2.58 percent and Volkswagen AG Vz. went down by 2.46 percent.

Volkswagen vz was the most traded share of the day with a turnover of 358.02 million euros (around 379.31 million U.S. dollars). Enditem
