UN mission in DR Congo conducts operation against Ugandan rebels

The UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) conducted an operation early Tuesday against a camp of the Ugandan rebels, Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), said a UN spokesperson here.

The mission carried out the operation in coordination with the Congolese armed forces near Eringeti in North Kivu, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told a daily briefing, saying the operation involves the use of attack helicopters and artillery fire.

"The mission has received reports of some 13 ADF killed in the operation," said Dujarric.

The operation came after ADF launched an attack on Sunday against a MONUSCO base in Makembi in North Kivu. One peacekeeper from Malawi was killed and another wounded during a heavy exchange of fire.

The ADF, a partly Islamist group of Ugandan origin formed in the 1990s, has continued to commit atrocities and human rights abuses that include killings of civilians, rape, abductions and looting in DR Congo despite the hunt of Congolese military.

According to UN statistics, since October 2014, the ADF has conducted a series of attacks in eastern DR Congo which have already resulted in more than 500 known civilian deaths. Enditem
