UN chief condemns deadly bomb attacks in Baghdad

Xinhua, December 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday condemned the two bomb attacks in Baghdad on Monday, which killed at least 15 civilians and injured several dozen, said a statement of Ban's spokesman.

The attacks occurred when people were marking the Shi'a religious observance of Arbaeen. Ban expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the victims, and wished a speedy recovery to those injured, said the statement.

Stressing that no cause can justify such acts of terrorism, Ban hoped that the perpetrators of these heinous crimes will be swiftly brought to justice, it said.

Ban reiterated the commitment of the United Nations and the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq to supporting the government and people of Iraq in bringing an end to sectarianism and fostering a spirit of national unity and reconciliation, it said.

Arbaeen is the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, Prophet Muhammad's grandson and the third holy figure for the Shiite Muslim sect. Enditem
