Chelsea submit plans for new Stamford Bridge ground

Xinhua, December 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

English Premier League side Chelsea FC have submitted a planning application for a new 60,000-seat stadium at Stamford Bridge, a statement announced by the club website on Monday.

The application comprises the demolition of the existing soccer stadium which has a capacity of 41,600 seats and other buildings within the ground, and the construction of a new larger stadium with a 60,000 seat capacity.

Other features include ancillary stadium-related uses including a club shop and museum, plus a separate restaurant/cafe use.

According to reports, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) disclosed last year that the Blues had inquired about the possibility of playing at home of the England rugby team if the London club's stadium was redeveloped.

The Stamford Bridge stadium, built in 1877, became the home field of Chelsea FC in 1905. Chelsea have been looking to expand their capacity for several years.

The club said the planning process will last beyond the end of the season; if the application is granted planning permission there will still be a lot of work to do before redevelopment can start. Endi
