At least 17 militants were killed when Pakistani army launched airstrikes in Pakistan's northwest tribal area of Khyber Agency on Friday, an army statement said.

Inter-Services Public Relations, the mouthpiece of Pakistani army, said in a statement that the troops backed by jet fighters pounded several militants' hideouts in Rajgal area of Khyber Agency, a semi-autonomous tribal area along Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Identities of the killed militants were not revealed, but banned outfits Lashkar-i-Islam and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan have s strong hold in the area.

The recent strikes are the part of the army's ongoing Khyber Operation in the area.

Launched in October last year, the Khyber Operation aims at the eradication of the militancy from the Khyber Agency which is considered as a hot bed of Taliban militants.

According to local media tally, over 500 militants have been killed and more than 400 surrendered in the operation which was conducted in two phases -- operation Khyber 1 and operation Khyber 2. Enditem
