Migrant, refugee arrivals in Greece pick up again: IOM

Xinhua, November 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

After the sharp decrease of sea arrivals in Greece recorded on Nov. 22-23, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported Friday that trends have since reversed as 3,516 people reached Greek soil on Nov. 24 and 5,140 the following day.

According to reports received by IOM, coast guard training exercises carried out in the Eastern Mediterranean may have been the reason behind the drop in arrivals recently observed.

As many as 110,000 migrants and refugees crossed into Greece from Turkey in November alone, bringing the total number of arrivals in the country this year to 721,217 while 105,000 have left Greece this month for the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

With the number of migrant and refugee arrivals in Europe this year standing at 868,282, IOM figures show that 3,551 individuals have lost their lives while attempting to reach Europe's main entry points which include Greece, Italy, Spain and Malta. Enditem
