EU offers new aid package to help Georgia reform

Xinhua, November 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Commission on Friday said it adopted a new aid package to help reforms in the European Union (EU)'s eastern neighbor country Georgia.

The Commission said the package totaling 100 million euros (105 million U.S. dollars) would go to reforms related to the EU-Georgia Association Agreement (AA) and agreements on mobility.

"With the Association Agreement, the EU-Georgia relations have moved to another level. The assistance package will support central elements in this ever closer relationship," Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations speaking from the Georgian capital Tbilisi.

The new package will additionally support Georgia in meeting its reform objectives in the sectors of public administration, agriculture and rural development.

It will help to promote an active civil society, assist key Georgian institutions in implementing the AA and advance Georgia's visa liberalization process with the EU.

In June 2014, the EU and Georgia signed an Association Agreement, which includes a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area. The Agreement "significantly deepens political and economic ties" with the EU in the framework of the Eastern Partnership, according to the EU. Endit
