Monchengladbach overcame resilient Sevilla 4-2 to maintain their chances for a berth in UFEA Europa League following the fifth round of Champions League's group stage on Wednesday.

The "Foals" ended Sevilla's hopes to advance to the knockout stages as Lars Stindl's brace helped the hosts to move past the Spanish side following a seesaw encounter in front of 47.177 spectators at the Borussia Park.

The hosts took the reins from the kick off but lacked in accuracy in the opening period. Nevertheless, Monchengladbach's pressure paid off at the half-hour mark as Stindl broke the deadlock. The midfielder capitalized on Granit Xhaka's low shot to tape home at the far post corner from very close range.

Andre Schubert's men remained in control after the restart but they yet had to wait until the 68th minute when Fabian Johnson made use of Julian Korb's through ball to curl the ball past Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico.

The "Foals" gained momentum and tripled the lead only 10 minutes later through Raffael, who finished a pass into path with a low shot from inside the box. However, Sevilla remained dangerous on the fast breaks and reduced the arrears following a fine finish by Vitolo, whose lob left Monchengladbach's custodian Yann Sommer chanceless in the 82nd minute.

Monchengladbach remained unimpressed and kept it bowling as Stindl restored the three-goal lead only moments later with a hammering low shot into the bottom left corner.

Sevilla weren't done with the scoring as Ever Banega slotted home a foul play penalty to make it 4-2 on the scoreboards after Xhaka floored Grzegorz Krychowiak inside the penalty area in the dying minutes of the game.

"Sevilla remained always dangerous on turnovers as we played very offensively. We need now a result at Manchester City to defend the third place," Monchengladbach coach Schubert said.

Monchengladbach climbed on the third place to increase their chances for the race of Group D's Europa League spot meanwhile Sevilla suffered their fourth loss and dropped to the last place.

Juventus sit atop the standings in Group D with 11 points followed by Manchester City (9 points), Monchengladbach (5 points) and Sevilla (3 points). Endi
