Israeli seriously wounded in West Bank stabbing attack

Xinhua, November 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

An Israeli was seriously injured in a stabbing attack near Hebron in the West Bank on Wednesday, the Israeli military and police said.

The attack took place at the El-Fuar Junction, near Hebron in the West Bank, where the Palestinian assailant left his car, armed with a knife, and stabbed a 20-year-old Israeli man, according to Israeli police.

Unconfirmed reports suggested that the victim is an Israeli soldier, who was seriously injured in his upper torso, according to the Israeli Red Crescent.

Israeli forces at the scene shot at the Palestinian assailant, but his condition was not clear as of press time. Israel Radio reported the assailant is in serious condition as well, though other unconfirmed reports charged the assailant was killed.

This is the latest in a series of lone wolf attacks carried out by Palestinians against Israelis throughout Israel and the West Bank and east Jerusalem territories in the past two months.

Nineteen Israelis have died in Palestinian attacks in the form of stabbing, shooting and vehicular attacks, while more than 90 Palestinians were killed either in clashes with Israeli security forces or by gunfire while allegedly trying to carry out attacks.

The violence was sparked in September amid strife over the east Jerusalem flashpoint site of the al-Aqsa mosque, and has spread throughout the country, amid dim prospects of renewing the peace process.

Israel occupied the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip territories, home to about five million Palestinians, in the 1967 Mideast War. The Palestinians wish to establish a state in accordance with the two-state solution in these territories.

The last round of peace talks between the parties ended in April 2014 without results, with both sides blaming each other for the current escalation in violence. Endit
