South Australia bushfire kills two

Xinhua, November 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two people have died in a bushfire north of South Australian capital of Adelaide on Wednesday, State Premier Jay Weatherill confirmed.

One body was found in a paddock near Pinery and another body was found in a car near Hamley Bridge, the state premier said.

There is an unconfirmed third death after a car was reported to have hit a tree.

"It's the very worst of news to hear there are two, possibly three fatalities ... Our thoughts are with the families," Weatherill was quoted by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) as saying.

Weatherill also confirmed at least three people who were helping fight the fire have been taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with severe burns.

"We also know that there are many homes, sheds, crops and livestock losses due to the active fire front, I can't give you exact figures at this point," he said.

The fire front is about 40 kilometers wide and is burning between Nuriootpa and Kapunda.

South Australia Country Fire Service has issued an updated emergency warning for the "extremely dangerous" bushfire, as it burns near Kapunda.

Weatherill said there were five rapid assessment teams on the ground looking at property damage and stock damage.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning about the catastrophic conditions this morning, after high temperatures and winds gusts up to 74km/h were recorded in the area. Endit
